BAND

CREDIT: 0.5 or 1 (4.A grading) GRADE 9-12

ONE SEMESTER OR FULL YEAR

PREREQUISITE: Prior experience on a band instrument or currently enrolled in band lessons

REQUIREMENT: Extra-curricular time for practice and performance

Students have an opportunity to understand and perform diverse styles of music in the Marching, Concert, and Pep Bands. An opportunity to

participate in contests and/or competitions either as an individual or in small ensembles is also offered through the Band. Participation in Band

requires out-of-school performances throughout the year. Members are expected to attend rehearsals and performances as scheduled. Students

are encouraged to take Band for the full year, but may take Band for one semester if the full year is not possible.

 

SANGAMON VALLEY YOUTH SYMPHONY

CREDIT: 0.5(Grade is not included in cumulative GPA) GRADE 10-12

PREREQUISITE: Instrumental audition with Youth Symphony Director

REQUIREMENT: Extra-curricular time for practice and performance

Students involved with the local Youth Symphony may earn SHG credit. This fulfills the one-half credit required in Fine Arts.

 

BAND HONORS

CREDIT: 1 (5.A grading) GRADE 10-12

PREREQUISITE: 3.6 or higher in previous year; audition/consultation with Band Director

In addition to the regular Band requirements at an A level, the student will successfully prepare the audition materials and participate in the

District IMEA Band Festival and All-State. The student will also participate in the IHSA Solo and Ensemble Contest in the Spring. The 25

student will prepare/present a research paper on an area of Musicology. The student will learn and pass a comprehensive test in Music Theory

or Music History equivalent to the first level in college.

 

MIXED CHORUS

CREDIT: 0.5 or 1 (4.A grading) GRADE 9-12

ONE SEMESTER OR FULL-YEAR

PREREQUISITE: No previous requirement necessary

Mixed Chorus is a choral group which has musicianship, excellence and performances as its primary goals. In this class, students will learn

vocal techniques, basic music theory as well as choral music. Students will also learn the performance skills of movement, communication and

stage presentation. In the first semester, all students perform at Preview Night, the Christmas Show, and at selected school and community

events. In the second semester, students may perform at IHSA State Contest, the Spring Concert, and at other selected events. Scheduled

performances and practices are mandatory for all members and contribute to the course grade. Students are encouraged to take Mixed Chorus

for the full year, but may take it for a semester if the full year is not possible.

 

MIXED CHORUS HONORS

CREDIT: 1 (5.A grading) GRADE 10-12

PREREQUISITE: A - or higher in previous Mixed Chorus; Consultation with director; ability to read and learn college-level music

independently

This course is assigned for Mixed Chorus students who wish to study Music History and Theory at an honors level and develop their ability as

soloists and performers. In addition the regular Mixed Chorus work, students must audition for the IMEA District Chorus. After independent

study, students must pass a comprehensive test in music theory or music history. Students will prepare and present a research paper on an

assigned topic in Musicology. Private voice lessons or an extensive piano background are recommended for students in the honors program.

Honors students must enroll for the full year of class.

 

PREMIERE

CREDIT: 1 (4.A grading) GRADE 9-12

PREREQUISITE: Audition Only

REQUIREMENT: Extra-curricular time for practices and performances

This select group of vocalists will further develop at an intermediate level the technical, musical, and performance skills learned in Mixed

Chorus. In the first semester, all students will perform at Preview Night, the Christmas Show, and may perform on the Christmas Tour. In the

second semester, students participate at IHSA contest, the Spring Concert, and selected community events, such as the Spring Tour. Schedule

performances and practice are mandatory for all members and contribute to the course grade. Students are encouraged to audition for the

Spring musical. Enrollment in Premiere is suggested for the full year.

 

PREMIERE HONORS

CREDIT: 1 (5.A grading) GRADE 10-12

PREREQUISITE: Minimum grade of A- in previous year of Choral group; consultation with director; ability to read and learn

intermediate level music.

REQUIREMENT: Extra-curricular time for practices and performances

This course is designed for Premiere students who wish to study Music History and Theory at an honors level and develop their abilities as

soloists and performers. In addition to the regular Premiere work, students must audition for the IMEA District Chorus. After independent

study, students must pass a comprehensive test in music theory or music history. Students will prepare and present a research paper on an

assigned topic in Musicology. Private voice lessons or an extensive piano background is recommended for students in the honors program.

Honors students must enroll for the full year.

ENCORE

CREDIT: 1 (4.a grading) GRADE 9-12

PREREQUISITE: Audition Only

REQUIREMENT: Extra-curricular time for practices and performances

This select group of vocalists will further develop at the accelerated and/or college-level the technical, musical, and performance skills learned

in Mixed Chorus and Premiere. They represent SHG as a show choir and study a wide variety of advanced choral literature. They continue the

study of music theory and history and refine their sight reading and aural skills. All Encore students perform in the Christmas and Spring shows

and at the IHSA Contests. This group also performs frequently throughout the year at civic and community events. Scheduled performances

and practices are mandatory for all members and contribute to the course grade. Students are required to audition for the Spring musical.

Enrollment in Encore is for the full year.

 

ENCORE HONORS

CREDIT: 1 (5.A grading) GRADE10-12

PREREQ: Minimum grade of A- in previous year of Choral group;

Consultation with director; ability to read and learn college level music independently.

This course is designed for Encore students who wish to study Music History and Theory at an honors level and develop their abilities as

soloists and performers. In addition to the regular Encore work, students must audition for the IMEA District Chorus. After independent study,

students must pass a comprehensive test in music theory or music history. Students will prepare and present a research paper on an assigned

topic in Musicology. Private voice lessons or an extensive piano background is recommended for students in the honors program. Honors

students must enroll for the full year class.

BEGINNING GUITAR

CREDIT: 0.5 (4.a GRADING) ONE SEMESTER GRADE 9-12

PREQUISITE: Student must provide his/her own guitar, acoustic or electric with small amplifier

This course will use the guitar to focus on basic music concepts and history. Students will learn to play guitar by studying and listening to

music from rock to classical. They will learn to read music and to sight-read simple melodies. They will learn basic music theory, such as key

and time signatures, rhythm, and common chord progression and scales. Note: this class would not be suitable for students who already play or

read music.

BAND LESSONS

CREDIT: 0.5 (No grade weighting) GRADE 9-12

Private lessons are available on any band instrument to any student who wishes to develop his/her musical potential. The credit received fulfills

the half-credit Fine Arts requirement for graduation. Students come from study hall once each week for the private lesson. On the remaining

days, they may practice in the music department or remain in study hall. The cost per weekly lesson of 45 minutes will be announced before

registration each year. Qualified students are eligible to study for the Silver Cross and Gold Medal awards.

STRING LESSONS

CREDIT: 0.5 (No grade weighting) GRADE 9-12

(Grade is not included in cumulative GPA)

Private lessons are available in violin, viola, cello, and string bass to any interested student. The half-credit received for a full year of lessons

fulfills the Fine Arts requirement for graduation. Students come from study hall once each week for the private lesson. On the remaining days,

they may practice in the music department or remain in study hall. The cost per 45 minute lesson is dependent on the fees of the adjunct string

teacher. Qualified students are eligible to study for the Silver Cross and Gold Medal awards.

PIANO/ORGAN LESSONS

CREDIT: 0.5 (No grade weighting) GRADE 9-12

(Grade is not included in cumulative GPA)

Private lessons in piano and organ are available to any interested students. The credit received fulfills the half-credit Fine Arts requirement for

graduation. Students come from study hall once each week for the private lesson. On the remaining days, they may practice in the music

department or remain in study hall. The cost per weekly lesson of 45 minutes will be announced before registration each year. Qualified

students are eligible to study for the Silver Cross and Gold Medal awards.

VOICE LESSONS

CREDIT: 0.5 (No grade weighting) GRADE 9-12

(Grade is not included in cumulative GPA)

PREREQUISITE: Written approval of vocal instructor before registering

Private voice lessons are available to any student who wishes to develop his/her vocal talent. The credit received fulfills the half-credit Fine

Arts requirement. Students come from study hall once each week for the private lesson. On the remaining days, they may practice in the music

department or remain in study hall. Priority will be given to students who are currently enrolled in Mixed Chorus, Premiere, and Encore. The

cost per weekly lesson of 45 minutes will be announced before registration each year. Qualified students are eligible to study for the Silver

Cross and Gold Medal awards.

SILVER CROSS

CREDIT: 0.5 (No grade weighting) GRADE 11, 12

(Grade is not included in cumulative GPA)

PREREQUISITES: Completion of departmental requirements to begin study for Silver Cross

Students taking private lessons in piano, organ, voice, or band instruments are eligible for the Silver Cross award. An intermediate level of

proficiency as well as prescribed works and a recital complete the work necessary for the honor.

GOLD MEDAL

CREDIT: 0.5 (No grade weighting) GRADE 11, 12

(Grade is not included in cumulative GPA)

PREREQUISITES: Silver Cross award; Advanced level of study

Students taking private lessons in piano, organ, voice, or band instruments are eligible for the Gold Medal award. An advanced level of

proficiency as well as proscribed advanced level work and a solo recital complete the work necessary for the honor.

SENIOR RECITAL CREDIT: 0

PREREQUISITE: 2 YEARS OF PRIVATE LESSONS AT SHG.

Students taking private lessons in piano or voice instruments are eligible for the Senior Recital award. In both piano and voice, an intermediate

level of proficiency as well as prescribed works and a recital complete the work necessary for the honor. Requirements: 2 yrs. of private study at

SHG.

Piano – successful completion of level 3 piano technique, theory and repertoire principles.

Voice - half of Silver Cross requirements: Completion of theory book, Sing Legato book, half of sight-singing book, 4 Italian arias, 15 art

songs.

Adjudication before a panel.

Recital consisting of 2 songs, both memorized in contrasting style, one foreign language song.
