This school year, SHG is requiring all students to have an Internet-ready device for school use. The following are some details and answers to some common questions about this new policy.

Why are SHG students required to own a device for school? SHG prepares students for college and global engagement by integrating technology into our curriculum. The ability to access, analyze, and act on information is critical to education and increasingly dependent on Internet access.

What are the device requirements? We realize that there are thousands of Internet-ready devices on the market. However, there will be some basic requirements imposed on the devices that will narrow down the selection. The requirements are as follows:

  • Minimum 11" screen
  • Physical keyboard
  • Modern browser (>Safari 5.1, Firefox 25, Chrome 23, Internet Explorer 11)
  • WiFi g/n/ac capable
  • 8 hour battery life
  • Headphone jack

If you are not sure if your device/the device in which you are interested meets these requirements, a brief Google search of your product should lead you to a list of specifications for the device.

Does SHG recommend any particular device? SHG recommends the Samsung Google Chromebook 2 for its fast start-up time, ease of use, excellent battery life, and low cost.

How will the device be used? Students will use the devices every day both in and out of the classroom for Internet access, Google Apps, research, composition, presentation, and online assessment.

What is Google Apps? Google Apps is a software service for students and staff at SHG which provides access to Google's e-mail and collaboration software. Each student’s account will be their ID number, and a password will be set by the student at the beginning of the year. More information on security and privacy with Google's services is available here.

How can I keep my device safe at school? The delicate nature of today's devices makes protecting them inherently difficult. However, these few tips are a good place to start.

  • Purchase a case or cover for the device that is strong enough to protect it against daily wear and tear
  • Never place books or other heavy items on top of the screen
  • Keep the device in the student's locker when not in use

Can I charge my device while at school? It is expected that all students come to school with fully charged devices. A dead battery is not an excuse for missing out on an activity or presentation.

Do I need WiFi at home? Home WiFi is strongly encouraged, but not necessary. Free WiFi is available at all Starbucks locations, most McDonald's restaurants, Barnes & Noble, and many other places. A few locations near SHG are highlighted on the map below.
