MIXED CHORUS - .5 or 1 credit (4.A grading)
Mixed Chorus is a choral group which has musicianship, excellence and performance as its primpary goals. In this class, students will learn vocal techniques, basic music theory as well as choral music. They will also learn the performance skills of movement, communication, and stage presentation. In the first semester, all students perform at the Preview Night, the Christmas Show and at selected school and community events. In the second semester, students may perform at IHSA State Contest, the Spring concert and at other selected events. Scheduled performances and practices are mandatory for all members and contribute to the course grade. Students are encouraged to take Mixed Chorus for the full year, but may take it for a semester if the full year is not possible.
MIXED CHORUS HONORS - (5.A grading) - Minimum grade of A- in previous year of choral group; consultation with director. This course is designed for Mixed Chorus students who wish to study Music History and Theory at an honors level and develop their ability as soloists and performers. In addition to the regular Mixed Chorus work, students must audition for the IMEA District Chorus. After idependent study, students must pass a comprehensive test in music thory or music history. Students will prepare and present a research paper on an assigned topic in Musicology. Private voice lessons or an extensive piano background and recommended for students in the honors program. Honors students must enroll for the full year of class.
PREMIERE ENSEMBLE - 1 credit (4.A grading) - Minimum of one year previous choral/peformance group experience; all students must audition with director/consultation with director.
This selected group of vocalists will further develop the technical, musical and performance skills learned in Mixed Chorus. They represent SHG as a show choir and also study a wide variety of choral literature. They continue the study of music theory and history, and refine their sightreading and aural skills. All Premiere Ensemble students perform in the Christmas and Spring Shows, and at the IHSA Contests. This group also performs frequently throughout the year at civic and community events.
PREMIERE ENSEMBLE HONORS - (5.A grading) - Minimum grade of A- in previous year of Choral/performance group; consultation with director, ability to read and learn advanced music.
Extra-curricular time for practice and performances. This course is designed for Premiere Ensemble students who wish to study Music History and Theory at an honors levele and develop their abilities as soloists and performers. In additionl to the regular Premiere Ensemble work, students must audition for the IMEA District Chorus. After independent study, students must pass a comprehensive test in music theory or music history. Students will prepare and present a research paper on an assigned topic in Musicology. Private music lessons or piano background is recommended for students in the honors programs. Honors students must enroll for the full year of class.
LEARNING OUTCOMES FROM CHORAL CLASSES
All classes will have focus upon proper vocal technique, knowledge of music theory, perform literature from various periods of music, music performance, and to develop and maintain the Catholic dimension within the Choral Music Department.
