English III Honors
American Literature
ENGLISH III EXPECTATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
Welcome to English III, American Literature! This class covers the beginnings of American Lit from approximately 1607 to the present. I look forward to working closely with each of you. This is YOUR CLASS...make the most of it!
Books:
Your textbook is a state-loaned book. So, I ask that you cover your book BY TOMORROW and keep it covered for the remainder of the year. I will give “surprise” points once in a while throughout the year for keeping your book covered and in good condition.
Other:
Please have the following every day in class:
1. Blue or black pens; no work is to be done in pencil! My poor old eyes can’t handle it!
2. One large spiral notebook; we take copious notes. Please write your name and class period on the inside cover. A 5-subject notebook would be best.
3. Loose leaf paper - wide ruled, please.
4. One two-pocket folder.
Grading/Testing:
To evaluate your proficiency in all class areas, points are given for note taking, presentations, projects, class discussion, “pop” and announced quizzes - both open/closed note, tests, compositions, essays, and - of course - the dreaded research paper! Assignments are to be handed in WHEN DUE! Late work will receive a “0" except in the case of excused absence. “Pop” quizzes will not be made up, and scheduled tests are always to be made up the day you return to class either before school or during your study period. It is your responsibility to see me about make-ups. These major tests are always announced well in advance, so you should be prepared when you return after an absence. Call me or someone in your class if you need an assignment or are unsure of testing material or of a date. Remember, if you have an extended absence, you may notify the school and pick up assignments for all classes. Always check my web page if you are in doubt about any assignment.
Miscellaneous:
1. Each student is to be on time for class and in his/her assigned seat at the bell; school policy stipulates that lateness will result in a detention. Also, please be in dress code BEFORE you enter my classroom. Please remain in your seat until the end of class bell - no lining up at the door.
2. Each student is to raise his/her hand and wait to be called on. This is simple courtesy to all in the room. Everyone is expected to be courteous and respectful to all others in the class, and you may expect such treatment in return. NO FOUL LANGUAGE WILL BE TOLERATED!!!
3. CHEATING IS NEVER PERMISSIBLE! I define cheating as turning in any work which you did not create yourself, an answer from someone else in a test situation, plagiarizing someone else’s writing (that includes internet, web sites, etc.), looking at someone else’s paper during a test, and so on. Copying from any other source without giving credit to that source (i.e., Spark Notes, Internet, etc.) is considered plagiarism. Please do not put yourself, another person, your parents, or me in a position where we have to deal with academic dishonesty. You are here to learn. Challenge yourself. We will be using turnitin.com to avoid plagiarism temptation!
Also, refer to the section in your gold research manuals pertaining to plagiarism.
4. Eating/drinking in class are not permitted; vandalizing school property - writing on books, desks, etc.- is not acceptable. Putting your head down and/or sleeping in class is VERY UNACCEPTABLE (not to mention insulting!) Any of these things will result in a detention.
5. No one may be dismissed from class to use restrooms, visit lockers, etc. This is not MY rule; it is school policy. Notify me if you are ill. Otherwise, use your time between classes wisely!
6. In case of an emergency or of my absence, one person in each class will be appointed “monitor”.
7. Papers are to be headed in the upper right corner as follows:
Name (first and last)
English III
Period
Date (month, day, year)
8. One “R” rated movie is shown in this class: Last of the Mohicans. If for any reason you or your parents do not wish you to view this, let me know and an alternative assignment will be given.
