COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The Guidance Department receives information on a number of scholarships. This is by no means a comprehensive listing. There are many university sponsored scholarships that are not listed here but can be found on the university website or by contacting the university's financial aid department. There are also many websites available. We have listed several helpful internet sites. Scholarships and corresponding deadlines often change from year to year. We will update these dates as they become available but have listed last year's information for planning purposes. We encourage students and their parents to contact us for additional information.
SEPTEMBER /OCTOBER

AES ENGINEERS SCHOLARSHIP

Award: $500 Deadline: October 7, 2011

Criteria: This scholarship is awarded on the basis of character, as determined by evaluation of the essays that are submitted. To apply, students must submit an essay of no more than 1000 words in answer to one of two questions. For more information, go towww.aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm.

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ART SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION
Award: Various Full Tuition Scholarships Deadline: Not received yet / check website

Criteria: Participants must draw from a live model in costume using charcoal or pencil. The full figure is to be completed in black and white on a 15” x 20” illustration board, cold press surface. Participants must also draw a still life in color. For more information, go to www.aaart.edu.

AMERICAN LEGION ORATORICAL CONTEST
Award: Varied-$1,500-$18,000 Deadline: Contact your local American Legion Post of the the IL State Headquarters Office of the American Legion
Criteria: The purpose of the National High School Oratorical Contest is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the constitution of the United States on the part of high school students. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship. Contest involves a series of steps with local contests beginning after Oct. 15. For more information, go to www.legion.org.
ARTS RECOGNITION AND TALENT SEARCH
Award: $100-25,000 Deadline: not received yet /check online

Criteria: Senior in high school graduating in 2011 with talent in dance, film and video, jazz, music, photography, theater, visual arts, voice and writing. It is a chance to receive national exposure at ARTS Week in January, 2011 in Miami, FL and become a Presidential Scholar in the Arts in June 2011. For more information, go to www.ARTSawards.org.

BURGER KING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Award: $1,000 Deadline: not received yet/ check online

Criteria: One high school senior from the high school who have a cumulative GPA of 2.5/4.0
scale, works an average of 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year, demonstrates participation in
community service and/or co-curricular activities, demonstrate financial need, obtain required
recommendations, and plan to enroll in an accredited two or four year college/university or vo-

COCA-COLA SCHOLARS FOUNDATION
Award: $10,000-$20,000 Deadline: October 31, 2011
Criteria: Selection will be based on a number of factors, with special emphasis on the character, personal merit, and background of each individual. Merit may be demonstrated in a variety of ways: leadership in school, civic and other extracurricular activities; academic achievement; and motivations to serve and succeed in all endeavors. Selection will be sensitive to the ethnic and economic backgrounds of applicants, reflecting as much as possible the demographic profiles of the various selection districts. DANFORTH SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Award: Partial-Full Tuition Deadline: usually Oct. 15 each year
Criteria: The Danforth Scholars Program is open to prospective undergraduate students applying to Washington University. Students will be considered from nominations only; students may not apply directly for the program. The program is merit based, but need will be considered as part of the award process. EDUCATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION
Award: Varied Deadline: Not received yet /check online
Criteria: The Foundation will provide over 61 scholarships for awards totalling $100,000 in scholarships at the high school level through Who's Who Among American High School Students.  All students listed will automatically receive an application. Awards are given to meritorious students to use at any accredited post secondary institution in the field of study of their choice. HEARST FOUNDATION- U.S. SENATE YOUTH PROGRAM
Award: One week trip to Washington D.C. and $5,000 college scholarship Deadline: October 5, 2011

Criteria: Candidate must be a junior or senior high school student currently serving in an elected capacity in student government or a related organization and with an intention to take government courses in college. Applicant must be a permanent resident of the U.S., be enrolled in an Illinois high school and have at least one parent who is a legal resident of Illinois. Candidates must also demonstrate leadership ability, high scholastic standing and demonstrated ability to achieve, clear speech and logical thought processes, and community involvement. HORATIO ALGER ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
Award: $1,000 or $10,000 Deadline: October

Criteria: Offered to seniors who exhibit integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity and want to pursue a bachelor's degree, but have critical financial need. Applicants must demonstrate academic achievement (min 2.0/4.0 GPA), involvement in co-curricular and community activities, and be planning on pursuing a bachelor's degree. OUTSTANDING STUDENTS OF AMERICA SCHOLARSHIP

Award: $1,000 Deadline:  not yet received/check online
Criteria:  National organizations dedicated to providing high school seniors with scholarships.  Scholarhips are payable to the college of the student's choice.  OSA is seeking a well rounded, intelligent student as a recipient.  The focus of the committee will be the students who are participative in community/school involvement and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above.  For more information and to download an application, go to www.outstandingstudentsofamerica.com.
PEPSI HISPANIC HERITAGE PROGRAM

WENDY'S HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN

FIRE "FREEDOM IN ACADEMIA" SCHOLARSHIP
Award: $1000-10,000 Deadline: Nove. 5, 2011
Criteria: High school seniors from across the U.S. are invited to write an in-depth essay explaining why free speech and First Amdenment rights are crucial to higher education and how abuses of these rights harm the college experience. For more information, go to www.thefire.org/contests.
GOLDEN APPLE SCHOLARS OF ILLINOIS
Award: Up to $18,000 in financial aid Deadline: November 1, 2011

Criteria: Teachers, counselors, principals and other non-family adults are invited to nominate high school students scheduled to graduate in 2009 who demonstrate an interest in or commitment to teaching in an Illinois school of need. Self nominations are also accepted.
If selected, student must maintain academic excellence at one of the 54 Illinois university partners, participate in four summer institutes, obtain an Illinois teaching certificate, and teach or five years in an Illinois school of need. For more information, go to www.goldenapple.org.

ILLINOIS JAYCEE CHARITABLE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
Award: $1,000 Deadline: November 1 each year

Criteria: Graduating high school seniors, residing in Illinois, who will be enrolling in their first year of college/ university or vo-tech school. Recipients are based upon involvement, leadership roles, honors and awards, employment, personal statement, financial statement, scholastic achievement and references.  To download an application, go to www.ijcf.org.

LINCOLN LAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE SPECIAL ADMISSIONS SCHOLARSHIP
Award: $160 Deadline: Varied
Criteria: These scholarships are available to junior and senior high school students taking classes at LLCC. To be eligible, student must have applied to LLCC, have transcript on file and be enrolled in a LLCC college credit course. This scholarship is available for spring and summer classes at LLCC. P.E.O. STAR SCHOLARSHIP
Award: $2500 Deadline: Novemeber 30, 2011
Criteria: Established in 2009, the STAR Scholarship provides a $2,500 award to high school senior women who wish to pursue post-secondary education. Student Eligibility Criteria: Exhibits excellence in leadership, extracurricular activities, community service, academics and potential for future success,20 years of age or under by the application deadline, in the final academic year (senior year) of secondary education at time
of application deadline, minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States or Canada, plans to attend an accredited post-secondary educational institution in the

DECEMBER
AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP
Award: $10,000 and $25,000 Deadline:  Not received yet/Check online if applicable
Criteria: High school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their activities in school, the community or the workplace. Applicant must be U.S. citizen, planning to enroll full time in a college or university, demonstrate ambition and self-drive as evidenced by outstanding achievement, and be recommended by an adult professional who can attest to the student's achievement. ELKS MOST VALUABLE STUDENT COMPETITION
Award: $1,000-$15,000 Deadline: December 2, 2011
Criteria: The Elks National Foundation will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest-rated boys and girls in the 2009 competition. Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks. FIRESIDE ESSAY SCHOLARSHIP
Award: $1,000 Deadline: December19, 2011
Criteria: Each Catholic High School may nominate one senior . Selection is based on outstanding leadership in embracing religious education. Application includes an essay by student and faculty recommendation. For more information, stop by the Guidance Office.
ILLINOIS STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY- VERNA ROSS ORNDOFF SCHOLARSHIP
Award: $1,000 Deadline: not yet received/check online
Criteria: 1,000-1,500 word essay contest with the focus of the essay on Abraham Lincoln or a significant event in the Civil War period in Illinois.  For more information, go to www.historyillinois.org. 
KFC COLONEL'S SCHOLARS

Criteria: KFC Colonel's Scholars is looking for outstanding seniors with financial need and entrepreneurial spirit to qualify for this program.  Applicant must be a U.S. Citizen, senior graduating in 2009 with a GPA of 2.75 or higher who is planning on attending a public, in-state college or university and is pursuing a bachelor's degree. LINCOLNLAND LEGENDS PROGRAM
Award:  $4,000-12,000 Deadline: Not received yet/Check online if applicable
Criteria:  Student must submit a 1000-1500 word essay nominating someone who was born in, has lived in, or currently lives in the student's Congressional District in Illinois.   This scholarship provides an opportunity for Illinois students to identify Illinois citizens who have made significant contributions to society and who serve as role models and inspirational figures for youth.  For more information, please stop by the Guidance Department.
MENSA EDUCATION AND RESEARCH FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Criteria: Scholarship winners will received awards based on an essay of 550 words or less describing their academic or career goals. Nearly $60,000 was awarded last year. NATIONAL FEDERATION OF INDEPENDENT BUSINESS
YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR AWARD
Award: $1,000-$10,000 Deadline: December 15, 2011
Criteria: This award program was established to raise awareness among the nation's youth of the critical role that private enterprise and entrepreneurship play in the building of America. The Selection Committee will consider each applicant's academic record, extracurricular activities, leadership activities and character. SAE ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: The Society of Automotive Engineers offers a number of scholarships to qualified students who are interested in the study of engineering and the related sciences. Corporate sponsored scholarships range in value from $1,000-$10,000. Judging for these scholarships will be based on the criteria established by the sponsor and is outlined in the individual scholarship descriptions. The applicant must be enrolled in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). University sponsored scholarships range in value from $400 to full tuition. Applicant must attend the named university and enroll in a specific program of engineering, if required. DISCOVER CARD TRIBUTE AWARD SCHOLARSHIP (juniors only)

FLORENCE A. COOK RECRUITMENT GRANT

GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION
Award: Deadline: January 11, 2012

Criteria: Students are eligible to be considered if they are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic America, are a U.S. citizen, Unweighted GPA of 3.3, planning on attending college in fall of 2010, have demonstrated leadership abilities, meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility, and have completed all forms by deadline. ILLINOIS SOCIETY OF PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS (Capital Chapter)
Award:  various up to $3,000 Deadline: January 21, 2012

Criteria: Applicants must attend an engineering program at a university/college that has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (based on a 4.0 grade scale) and test score of:  SAT- 600 Math and 500 Verbal; or, ACT- 29 Math, 25 English.    To download an application, please go to www.illinoisengineer.com/chapter-capital.shtml. LINCOLN FORUM SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST

Criteria:  In honor of the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth, a contest is being co-sponsored by UIS and the Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.  There are three contest categories which include: Historical Essay, Creative Expression in the Written Word and Performace/Visual Arts.  Complete scholarship contest rules, forms and supplemental materials can be found at www.uis.lincolnforum/.

MCKELVEY FOUNDATION ENTREPRENEURIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria:  This scholarship is available to all high school seniors who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating their own businesses while in high school.  This business must have at least one employee, even if only part time.  Selection is not based on academic achievement or financial need.  Awards are based solely on demonstration of entrepreneurial spirit.  For an application, please go to www.mckelveyfoundation.org and click on Entrepreneurial Scholarship.
SANGAMON VALLEY MENSA SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY CONTEST
Award: $300-$1000 Deadline: January 15, 2012
Criteria: Awards are made on the basis of an essay of no more than 550 words that describes the
applicant's career, vocational, or academic goals. It is not necessary to be a member of Mensa.
Applicant must be enrolled the following year in an institution of post-secondary education. Go to http://www.mensafoundation.org/scholarships to download an entry form. There is at least one winner from Sangamon County. Deadline is usually December 31.
SIKICH GARDNER AND COMPANY, LLP

Criteria: High school senior who is resident of Sangamon County. Recipients must attend college/university and major in Accounting. Scholarship may be renewed annually provided student remains in the Accounting program and in good academic standing. Each participating high school may submit two applicant as finalists. SIMON YOUTH FOUNDATION COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Award: $1,200 Deadline: Not received yet/Check online if applicable

Criteria: Scholarship recipients will be selected according to several criteria, including academic record, leadership skills, participation in school and community activities, and financial need. For an application, stop by the Guidance Department or go to www.simonyouth.scholarshipamerica.org.

WALMART FOUNDATION/SAM WALTON COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP
Award: $1,000 Deadline: Not received yet/Check online
Criteria: Student must not be a Wal-Mart associate or an immediate relative of a Wal-Mart associate. Student must be a graduating senior planning on attending college in the fall. Applicant must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5/4.0 and have taken the ACT or SAT. Selection is based on a combination of financial need, academic record, ACT/SAT test scores, extracurricular activities, community involvement and work experience. Winners of the Community Scholarship are automatically entered into the National competition for a $20,000 scholarship. WASHINGTON CROSSING FOUNDATION

Criteria: Open to all seniors planning careers of service to the U.S. in local, state, or federal government. Judges' decision will be based on understanding of career requirements, purpose in choice of a career, preparation for such a career, qualities of leadership exhibited, sincerity and historical perspective. FEBRUARY
AMERICAN LEGION AMERICANISM ESSAY CONTEST

Criteria: Contest is open to Junior and Seniors. Student will write an essay no more
than 500 words on the subject of "Americanism-The Freedom to Choose ". Competition will be on a Post, Unit or Squadron level and continue on to the Auxilliary District and Division level.
Division 1st place winners will compete for the state awards ranging from $100-$1,000.

Criteria: Applicants must demonstrate commitment to and involvement in volunteer community service. Selection will be based on solid academic performance and community service. CBAI FOUNDATION FOR COMMUNITY BANKING ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Applicants must complete an essay capturing the theme of : "What I like most about my community bank". CONCLAVE MUSIC BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: This scholarship is a full-tuition scholarship presented to one incoming Musictech College music business student each academic year. This award is granted to the applicant who 1)demonstrates his or her ambition to pursue a career in the music industry; 2)has maintained a good academic record; and 3)demonstrates financial need. CONCLAVE RADIO INDUSTRY SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Radio scholarships are for those who want careers in any area of radio/broadcasting- air personality, advertising/sales, programming, writing, news, sports production, et. Applicant must be a high school senior and meet each individual school's entrance requirements. DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: All applicants must obtain a letter of sponsorship from their local DAR chapter. Various scholarships are available for applicants studying in the areas of political science, history, government and economics as well as nursing school and medical scholarships. EF GLOBAL CITIZEN AWARD

EPSILON SIGMA ALPHA FOUNDATION

FOCUS ON YOUR FUTURE- Chamber of Commerce

Criteria: Applicants must maintain a minimum C average and meet entrance requirements of the awarding institution at time of application to institution. The purpose of the awards is to reward students who have been proactive in preparing themselves for the world of work through after school employment, community service and responsibilities at home. Dependents of employees at LLCC, RMC, SCI, and UIS who receive benefits are not eligible for these awards. Stop by Guidance for an application.

HORACE MANN EMPLOYEE SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Applicants must be children of Horace Mann employees.
Scholarship applicants will be judged on a written essay, school and community
activities, high school transcript, and letters of recommendation. Financial need is not a
consideration, but applicants who have educational expenses paid through other

ILLINOIS CHEMICAL EDUCATION FOUNDATION
Award: $2,000 Deadline: Check online

Criteria: The objective of this scholarship is to recognize and honor top high school
senior science students who have exemplified outstanding achievement in academics,
extracurricular/employment activities and community involvement. Various personal
information must be completed as well as a one page essay on "How the study of
chemistry will impact the student's future and/or chosen career". For more details,

ILSSAR- GEORGE S. AND STELLA M. KNIGHT ESSAY CONTEST

Criteria: Contestants must be juniors and seniors in high school in the contest year. The
topic of the essay shall deal with: an event, person, philosophy, or ideal associated with
the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, or the framing of the United
States Constitution. Essay will be judged on historical accuracy, clarity of thought,
organization and proven topic, grammar and spelling, and documentation. Contest

LEAD PROGRAM IN BUSINESS
Award: Attendance at a Summer Business Institute Deadline: Not received yet /check online
Criteria: LEAD introduces minority high school juniors with strong academic credentials
and demonstrated leadership skills to challenging careers in business. Successful
applicants will attend a LEAD Summer Business Institute, hosted by a leading graduate
school of business. Participants live on a college campus, attend business classes, and
visit local corporations. African American, Hispanic American, and Native American
students in their junior year of high school are encouraged to apply. Acceptance to the

LINCOLN LAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: The following requirements apply to all scholarships unless the scholarship donor has requested other eligibility requirements, which are listed in the individual scholarship description.  Applicants must have primary residence in LLCC District #526, meet the stated grade point average, and complete a minimum of 75% of the LLCC coursework each semester.  For a scholarship package, go www.llccfoundation.org or stop by the Guidance office.
NATIONAL CO-OP SCHOLARSHIP

DAVEY SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION
Award: Loan Program Deadline: June 15, 2012

Criteria: This is a loan program available to students between the ages of 16 and 25 residing in Christian, Morgan and Sangamon Counties. The maximum loan shall be two-thirds of the cost of one year in college. The amount of the the loan is based entirely on need. For an application, please stop by the Guidance Department.

JEWISH GUILD FOR THE BLIND

Criteria: Applicant must be legally blind. Verification should be in the form of a statement from a state rehabilitation agency, an ophthalmologist or an optometrist. NATIONAL IMAGE, INC., CENTRAL ILLINOIS CHAPTER LATINO SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Criteria:  Applicant must be of Latino background, reside in Central Illinois, have minimum unweighted grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, be accepted to or attend an accredited university, college, or trade school, and app materials must be typed and written in English.  Stop by the Guidance Department for an application or more information.
TAU KAPPA EPSILON, GAMMA CHAPTER-Triangle Achievement Awards

Criteria: Two scholarships to male high school seniors who will attend the SIU-C in the Fall of 2011. VICTOR A. AND DAISY A. JUAREZ LATINO SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Applicant must be of Latino background ( one parent must be full Latino or both parents must be at least half), minumum unweighted gpa of 2.5, and college or university must be located in Sangamon County. Application package must include a complete app, copy of transcripts, letter of rec, personal essay, list of activities, and a letter of rec on these activities. Balanced Man Scholarship (SIUE)

Criteria: Applicant should excel in the areas of scholarship, leadership, athletics, community service, and exemplify the Balanced Man ideals of sound mind and sound body. Applicant should complete application found in Guidance. Interviews and other events will follow with winner being announced in August prior to start of SIUE classes. There is absolutely no obligation to join Sig Ep fraternity to be eligible for this scholarship.
AUGUST
FIJI BLACK DIAMOND SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Applicant must be incoming freshman male to the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign in the fall of 2007. Applications will be based on the following: academic achievements, high school activities, leadership positions, and community involvement.
