Introduction:
Welcome!! It is a pleasure to have you all in my class this year. We have a great and exciting year ahead of us. I am looking forward to working with each and every one of you. This handout is a guide for the rules, expectations, materials, procedures, and requirements for this class. Keep this in the front of your folder or binder for easy reference. Make sure you read it carefully and then please sign the contract at the end of this packet and return it by Tuesday August 23rd.
Purpose:
This class is designed as a laboratory course intended for those students who plan additional work in science. This course will cover basic theories of chemistry, with emphasis on developing laboratory and math skills.

Supplies: (Need by Tuesday August 23rd)
- 3-Ring binder for returned papers with dividers
- Notebook
- Scientific calculator
- Goggles ( labeled with name to stay in class)
- Pen /pencil
- White loose leaf paper

Teacher Expectations: I presume you have read, comprehended, and will follow all the rules as stated in the student handbook. Students are responsible for their actions and will be held accountable for their actions. The following items are of specific importance:
Reading Assignments:
- must be completed before class discussion
Homework:
- All work is due at the beginning of the hour for grading
- Complete your homework and assignments on time
- Assignments will be accepted one day late for 50% credit. Remember, some points are better than no points.
Quizzes:
- Expect several quizzes throughout the semester
- Quizzes will be timed and turned in immediately when time is called
- Unless you have an excused absence, quizzes cannot be made up
- Show all your work
Tests:
- Expect a test at the end of every chapter
- Tests have to be completed by the end of the class hour
- Tests can be made up but the make up test will be harder
Format:
- All written work (Quizzes, Tests, Homework, lab) will be turned in on standard size, white ruled loose leaf paper (No Frayed Edges) with name, date, and period on the right hand corner
- Papers without name will receive a Zero
- Written responses must be in complete correct sentences, one word answers are not acceptable.
- Skip lines between problems and show all your work
- Mathematical problems must be done in pencil with all the work shown
- Papers torn &/or ripped from a spiral notebook will receive a 2 point deduction
Notes:
- Notes taken during class will be evaluated weekly and will be graded at end of semester
Make-Up Work:
Notes, assignments, as well as tests and quizzes dates will be posted on the school’s website. It is your responsibility to check the website daily especially when you are absent
- If you do miss a test, you will be required to make it up on your next available study hall, before or after school hours. It is your responsibility to contact me to arrange a mutually agreeable time to take the make up the day you return.
- If you are present on the day a test is given, you must take the test even if you missed class in the days prior to the test day. It is your responsibility to check what was accomplished during your absence.
Behavior Expectations:
This class, as with most science classes, requires work outside the classroom. As a science student you are expected to be a full participant in each class session. This means you should come to class fully prepared, be an active participant in class discussions, be active in your lab group and take complete responsibility for your grade. In addition, you are responsible for:
- Being in your seat quiet and ready to work WHEN the bell rings. If you are not you will be marked Tardy.
- Bringing class materials with you. NO LOCKER PASSES
- Following instructions the first time given. This is especially important during lab.
- No food, drink, and chewing gum in the class
- Hands off electrical outlets, water faucets and gas jets, unless required for lab.
- Treating everyone in the classroom with utmost respect; teacher, substitute, yourself, and fellow classmate
- Wearing safety glasses and following all safety precautions in lab.
- Dress codes will be enforced.
- Following all expectations as explained in the SHG Student Handbook.
- Stay in your seat until I dismiss you
Inappropriate behavior and rules violations will generally lead to:
1st Offense: warning
2nd Offense: work detention / written warning
3rd Offense: detention &/or office referral
4th Offence: office referral
Parents will be contacted at any point deemed necessary!
Grades: Tests, Homework, Labs, Quizzes, Notebook, Semester Exam
Quarter grades are determined on point scale. Grades are calculated by adding the grades you earned and dividing them by the total number of points available.
Grading scale: All percentages for quarter grades, exam grades, and semester grades are as stated in the handbook (page 5)
It is your responsibility to keep track of your grades.

Purpose:
This is an accelerated course which provides an in-depth study of the structure of the number system; use of algebraic operations and functions; and quadratic equations, functions, and relations. Application of algebraic methods to practical situations is a focus of this course. This class prepares students for Algebra II Honors.

Your quarter grade will be determined by total points earned from daily quizzes, quizzes and tests. The quarter and semester grades will be rounded to the nearest whole percent. For example, 98.5% or higher rounds to 99%. Lower than half a percent rounds down. Each quarter grade will be worth 37.5% and the semester exam will be worth 25% to calculate your semester grade.
Quarter grades are determined on point scale. Grades are calculated by adding the grades you earned and dividing them by the total number of points available.
