ALGEBRA II HONORS
This is a rigorous approach to the standard topics of a second year of high school
algebra. This course contains work in linear, quadratic, and polynomial functions,
matrices, rational and irrational numbers, complex numbers, logarithms, sequences and
series, probability, statistics, and conic sections. Application of algebraic
methods to practical situations is a focus of this course. This class prepares juniors
for Pre-Calculus Honors and freshmen for Geometry Honors.
ALGEBRA II REGULAR
This course not only reviews Algebra I , but covers linear, quadratic, and polynomial
functions, radicals, logarithms, complex numbers, matrices, sequences and series,
conic sections, probability and statistics. This class prepares students for Pre-calculus I
(semester 1) and Pre-Calculus II (semestr 2) or Statistics (semester 2).
CLASS EXPECTATIONS
ALGEBRA II
Goals
- To achieve mastery of the concepts and mechanics of Algebra
- To develop critical thinking skills through problem solving
Expectations
- To work to the best of your ability
- To be prepared for class
- To be respectful of myself and your fellow peers
Materials needed for class each day
- Textbook (Algebra II regular level book must be covered.)
- Either a one inch loose leaf binder with pockets and loose leaf notebook paper or, a small spiral notebook with pockets
This is to be used exclusively for Algebra.
- Pencil, red pencil or pen for grading, and straight edge (6in ruler)
- Graph paper (store in pocket of notebook)
- TI 83 or 84+ graphing calculator
Assessment
Quarter grade % = ![]()
Points are earned from the following:
- Class work/homework -2pts for work completed; 1 pt for work over half done; and 0 pts for anything less. I will not accept late homework or give passes to get homework left in your locker.
- Quizzes – range in value from 5 to 30 points. They will usually be announced.
- Chapter test – approximately 100 points each.
- Extra credit – There will be opportunities to earn extra points. These problems are much more challenging than the typical daily work.
Your semester grade is determined by averaging final percentage points from each quarter and the semester exam. The semester exam is comprehensive and is worth ¼ of you semester grade. Each quarter is worth 3/8 of the semester grade.
Absences
- Tests are expected to be taken on the day they are scheduled. They are always announced several days in advance. Being absent from class the day before a test (review day) is no excuse for not taking it. If you miss the day of a test, you are expected to take it the day you return; either during class or a study hall. It is your responsibility to make the necessary arrangements. There is no makeup on short daily quizzes or group work. The score will be omitted.
- If you are absent due to sickness, it is your responsibility to get the notes from a fellow student or take the notes from that section in the book. It is also your responsibility to turn in makeup work. You are given the same number of days as you are absent to make up the work in order to receive credit. Again, no late work is accepted.
Assistance
- I will be available before and after school if you find you need individual assistance. Please inform me of your need so we can schedule a time when we can meet.
- A web site (www.mcdougallittell.com ) is available to those students enrolled in Algebra 2 regular. Lesson quizzes will give you immediate feedback and chapter tests will be graded after you have completed the test. There are many resources available. Check it out!
General Remarks
- You are expected to follow all the rules set forth in the student handbook. Make sure you read this.
- In the event I am absent, a substitute teacher will be assigned to the class. Students are to give the teacher the same respect as they give me. If there is a problem, repercussions will be administered accordingly.
- If there is a time when I am not in the classroom when the bell rings to begin class, please sit quietly. After 5 minutes a student, already assigned, should notify the office.
- Please read the information pertaining to Academic Dishonesty and Attendance in the student handbook.
- If you are participating in an extra curricular activity, carefully read the eligibility rules in the student handbook.
- Gum is allowed in the classroom. Please dispose of it in the waste can.
- If you or your parent would like to contact me, my e-mail address is wilcox@shg.org.
MAY YOUR YEAR AT SHG BE SUCCESSFUL!
