French I

(Grade 9-12)
Credit: 1 (4.A grading)

PREREQUISITE: Placement test scores

Level I French introduces students to the target language and its culture. The student will develop communicative skills in all three modes of communication and cross-cultural understanding. Emphasis is placed on proficient communication in the language. An introduction to reading and writing is also included as well as culture, connections, comparisons, and communities.

French II

(Grade 10-12)
Credit: 1 (4.A grading)

PREREQUISITE: French I, C or higher second semester

Level II French reinforces the fundamental skills acquired by the students in French I. the course develops increased listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills as well as cultural awareness. Specific content to be covered is a continuation of listening and oral skills acquired in French I. Reading and writing receive more emphasis, while oral communication remain the primary objective. The cultural survey of the target language-speaking people is continued.

French III Honors

(Grade 10-12)
Credit: 1 (5.A grading)

PREREQUISITE: French II, B or higher second semester or Teacher’s written permission

Level III French provides mastery and expansion of skills acquired by the students in French II. Specific content includes, but is not limited to, expansions of vocabulary and conversational skills through discussion of selected readings. Contemporary vocabulary stresses activities which are important to the everyday life of the target language-speaking people.

French IV Honors

(Grade 12)
Credit: 1 (5.A grading)

PREREQUISITE: French III, B or higher for second semester or Teacher’s written permission

Level IV French expands the skills acquired by the students in French III. Specific content includes, but is not limited to, more advanced language structures and idiomatic expressions, with emphasis on conversational skills. There is additional growth in vocabulary for practical purposes, including writing. Reading selections are varied and taken from the target language newspapers, magazines, and literary works.

German I

(Grade 9-12)
Credit: 1 (4.A grading)

PREREQUISITE: placement test scores

This course emphasizes basic conversational vocabulary, basic grammatical structures, simple sentence structure, and simple questions and responses. The present, imperative, present perfect, and future verb tenses will be covered. German culture and geography will be introduced.

German II

(Grade 10-12)
Credit: 1 (4.A grading)

PREREQUISITE: German I, C or higher

Level II German continues by expanding on the knowledge of the reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills achieved in Level I. Along with more vocabulary, the simple past verb tense and the use of modal verbs in all tenses will be added. More complex grammatical structures will be introduced and cultural awareness will be expanded.

German III Honors

(Grade 11-12)
Credit: 1 (5.A grading)

PREREQUISITE: German II, B or higher or Teacher’s written permission

Level III German is an advanced level of language study. The student reviews and expands the vocabulary, structure, and cultural content of Level I and II. The language and culture of Germany are viewed in light of political changes and history of the country. Within the framework of familiar language, numerous topics are presented to provide an in-depth view of current German culture. Student participation in dialogue situations and discussion of assigned reading is emphasized.

German IV Honors

(Grade 12)
Credit: 1 (5.A grading)

PREREQUISITE: German III, B or higher or Teacher’s written permission

Level IV German is intended for those students who are capable and willing to carry on a more intensive study of German. The course includes a general vocabulary and grammar review, outside reading assignments, and the introduction of German literature. The discussion of reading assignments will be carried on in the target language whenever possible. Important historical events are covered as well as well-known personalities and contributors to German history and culture. This could include artists, musicians, and politicians. Emphasis is on further development of oral proficiency and understanding through the use of authentic recordings, native speakers, group conversations, and oral reports. At this level, students further expand their language skills according to subject matter, situation, and medium.

Spanish I

(Grade 9-12)

Level I Spanish emphasizes basic conversational vocabulary, basic grammatical structures, simple sentence structure, and simple questions and responses. The present verb tense and the affirmative tú will be covered. The preterite tense will be introduced. Spanish culture and geography will be introduced.

Spanish II

PREREQUISITE: Spanish I, C or higher

Level II Spanish continues by expanding on the knowledge of the reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills achieved in Level I. Along with more vocabulary, the imperfect, and the preterite tenses will be added. More complete grammatical structures will be introduced and cultural awareness will be expanded.

Spanish III Honors

PREREQUISITE: Spanish II, B or higher or Teacher’s written permission

Level III Spanish goes beyond the basic mastery of grammar and vocabulary. It continues to emphasize the use of the Spanish language as a means of communication and emphasizes what the student is able to do with the language. Continuing to develop a strong foundation of vocabulary and structure the student is prepared to communicate in paragraphs rather than merely by means of sentences. Skills in reading and writing are strengthened, and knowledge and appreciation of Spanish culture is broadened by reading assignments and special projects.
